Are YOU an international student?
Visual artist May So is putting out a call to all international students to be part of her latest exhibition, ‘I AM an international student ’ at RMIT Union Arts’ First Site Gallery.
An international student herself, May is originally from Hong Kong and is now in her third year studying a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting) at RMIT.
Since early 2009, May has been creating artworks that explore the cultural impact of being an international student in Australia. Her works address the fragility of family dynamics and each student’s search for personal identity.
‘I AM an international student’ has taken place at RMIT Union Arts’ First Site Gallery in April 2010. Each image will feature an international student photographed with a cherished object they have brought with them from their homeland. It could be a doll, an item of clothing, a photo, or anything else that’s meaningful to them. And the project is running continually after it.
May is calling for any and all international students who would like to be part of the exhibition to contact her. She is extending the welcome to students RMIT-wide, as well as to students from all of Melbourne’s universities and schools.
For those who are interested in taking part, May is holding photography sessions at her studio in RMIT Building 2 on Bowen Street, from now until Nov. It takes just 15 minutes for May to capture the image and all photos will be used in the future exhibitions and publications.
